Seconde Nature
by Samuel Sighicelli (2020)
A headphone-based radio music drama based on a text by Pierre Kuentz with Ensemble SoundIniative and actors Charly Marty and Pauline Huruguen
DESCRIPTION
A “headphoned” community connected by sound waves; a world entered entirely through our ears. Gradually, we understand that this community is temporarily residing on the side of a mountain, and that the air in the valley down below is no longer breathable. Nearby, an unlisted cave holds a miraculous solution for re-pollination. We blindly follow our enlightened leader, She, a guru invested with a mission. We are participants in the transformation, preparing to implement the after. We get acquainted and deliberate together while awaiting the day that we can finally explore the cave.
Our inner voice, Him, is here to see what happens and bear witness. He doesn’t realize that following the group into the cave will lead to his own destruction.
There are many forms of speech:
“Table talk”: collective moments where words pour forth, guided by She.
“Nocturnes”: dialogued night scenes in nature, where She initiates Him.
“Visions”: which express Him’s private impressions.
The exploration of the cave and the group’s long descent toward their origins forms a sort of ritual.
The work is above all poetic and sensorial, like a contemporary fable, or meditation on passage: from logos to animal cry, from polis to nature.
The transformed live voices of the actors and musicians blend with recorded voices to weave a heterotopia underpinned by music.
