Opera, libretto by Maylis de Kerangal

DESCRIPTION

Composer Samuel Sighicelli’s first opera, created in Rennes with a group of 17 students from the Pont Supérieur de Bretagne, combines contemporary art music (including classical singing), oral traditional music, and amplified popular music. Both the libretto by Maylis de Kerangal and the score were developed alongside students during the 2022-2023 season, with the participation of artists such as Donatienne Michel Dansac, Thierry Thieu Niang, Pierre Kuentz, Caty Olive, and the musicians Eva Darracq and Olivia Martin.

The libretto explores a painfully topical age-old theme: how do we, as humans, recover from the horrors of war? How do we find a way out of conflict and forge a path toward reconstruction and redemption? A contemporary “Song of the Earth” filled with more questions than pathos, and more focused on rebirth than death. The project, helmed by Sphota, received funding from the “Mondes Nouveaux” du Ministère de la Culture, and support from the Opéra de Rennes.
